The Sunday The Dynasty Unfolded
In this addition I will take you back to a very important event and year: March/April 1965, I am really not 100%sure which month or particular Sunday this was but it became known as the Sunday that the dynasty was first unfolded. Coming from previous early seasons the Doll/Delo combination had struggled with inferior equipment and sub-par drivers but this year would be a tremendous turn around. During the winter of 1965 Bud and Delmer got together and decided to get serious about the sport, they knew they needed a better product (car) and driver if they were ever going to be competitive. During the winter Bud took his 1956 Chevy (his personal car) and converted it to a modified road stock (DLM) to race against the hot dogs at Pennsboro and other tracks in the Ohio Valley area. Bud had massaged the street version 327ci and it was a formidable car anytime anyone challenged him to a street race, but this would be a different deal on the big ½ mile Pennsboro track. The car was basically stock as compared to today’s behemoth’s, stock rear-end, stock fuel tank, stock a-frames and brakes, basically a stock car. I remember, like it was yesterday, going to Pennsboro for the first race. Now I need to back up just a little to add another very important piece to this. When Bud and Delmer made the decision to go forward with this project they wanted a driver with a winning history so during the build they had a verbal agreement with a driver from the Parkersburg area to chauffer the new entry but unfortunately the gentlemen was injured in and industrial accident during the winter so they where up the creek without a driver. Now is when a big piece of the puzzle gets locked into place. For several years in the very early 60’s there was a young man that drove almost anything that went fast, coupes, super modified and what we would call claimers. He won at the Valley, Hilltop and especially liked the longer track at Pennsboro. I never really heard, or forgot if I did, know who or how he and the boys got hooked together but Bobby Boyles came to the garage and was fitted to the car, this was the last piece of the puzzle. Now on this particular Sunday the car was pulled to the speedway behind Bud’s wife’s pink and yellow Old’s 88, yes that is correct’ what a site by todays standards. Well time trials began and when Bobby got the #80 on the long back straight it was painfully evident that they had an incorrect gearing in the car’ I thought it blew up from all the smoke but Bud corrected the issue before the races started and as you can see from the picture it was a winner right out of the box. Numerous wins everywhere the combination showed up, 19 feature wins the first year. Bobby drove for DBR for several years winning numerous features and track championships: TRACKS: Pennsboro, Ohio Valley, Hilltop. Skyline, Morgantown, Brennen/Sirks, Weston, Elkins, Beckley, Tyler County, Saint C, Wheeling Creek, Midway, Crooksville, Mansfield, Orville, Eldora, Southern Ohio, Atomic, Cumberland, Heidelberg, Motordrome, Smucker’s and many others. I hope those who were privileged to see this team in action appreciates this information
